101 Non-Emergency Police Calls Free as of 1st April

The Home Office announced recently that the charge for calling the police non-emergency number 101 would be scrapped from 1st April 2020. You should now be able to call 101 free of charge.

However, from 1st April to 1st July, some small telephone service operators will still be charging customers for using the 101 service. The Home Office is to urge those providers to refund their customers. The vast majority of people can now use the service free of charge.

You can call the police on 101 to report a crime or incident that has already happened; to request an update on a crime you have reported, or to make a complaint. However, you should always call 999 if a crime is in progress or in an emergency.

You can also report crimes or incidents on the website of most police forces, where you can also raise concerns about areas where people are not adhering to the social distancing restrictions set out by the Government during the Coronavirus pandemic.
