Boat Fire Safety Week 27th May – 6th June 2016

Boat Fire Safety Week between 27th May and 6th June will see firefighters from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service out on the towpath giving out FREE smoke and CO alarms and doing boat fire safety checks, so keep an eye out for them. This follows the Service’s successful series of Boat Fire Safety Talks in canalside pubs over the winter. This is their schedule:

Honey Street area 27th May 2016: Joel Williams, Amesbury Fire Station

Bradford on Avon area 31st May2016: Shaun Milton and Neil Hiscocks, Trowbridge Fire Station

Devizes area 31st May 2016: Sam Allison, Devizes Fire Station

Froxfield to Wootton Rivers 1st June 2016: Dan Burton, Marlborough Fire Station

Froxfield to Wootton Rivers 2nd June 2016: Dan Burton, Marlborough Fire Station

Bradford on Avon area 3rd June 2016: Guy Tadman, Trowbridge Fire Station

You can also contact Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service on 01380 732972 to arrange a boat fire safety visit. Here are some fire safety tips that firefighters shared with boaters at the talks over the winter:

*Fit a suitable smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm.

*Make a fire action plan.

*Take extreme care when refuelling with petrol or changing gas cylinders.

*Avoid using portable gas equipment on-board, where possible, and store all gas canisters in special gas lockers or open places where any leaks will flow overboard.

*Routinely check items such as battery terminals and fuse box connections for damaged strands or signs of overheating.

*Take care when doing repairs, and keep interiors well ventilated when using adhesives, paints and spirit based products.
