Local MP’s fundraising canal walk

Chippenham MP Michelle Donelan walked the 87-mile length of the K&A canal last weekend to help raise funds for a new building for Holt Pre-School. She completed the walk yesterday having raised around £6,400. The Chippenham constituency includes the K&A Canal from Dundas to Bowerhill. Michelle Donelan is the Minister of State for Higher and Further Education.

Grants to help boater children with online education

Julian House Travelling Communities Support Service can help families apply for funding to buy tablets, smart phones and data if their children need these to access online education while schools are closed during the current Covid-19 lockdown.

Please respond to Wiltshire Gypsy and Traveller strategy consultation survey by 12th March

Wiltshire Council is consulting on its future Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and Boater (GRT&B) strategy. Please make sure that the voices and views of the liveaboard boater community are heard by completing this online survey by 5pm next Thursday 12th March 2020. CRT’s plans for the K&A include more enforcement

CRT’s interim Regional Director for Wales and the South West, Jon Horsfall, confirmed on 18th July 2019 that CRT remains “committed to delivering” the strategic programmes that were devised by former regional director Richard Thomas in conjunction with User Group Forums in 2018 and 2019 and a study day in which the liveaboard boating community was significantly under-represented despite efforts to persuade the former director to include us.

Government consultation on Home Education – ends 24th June 2019

The Department for Education is carrying out a consultation on setting up a compulsory registration and monitoring scheme of children who are educated at home or not in mainstream schools. It closes on 24th June 2019.

CRT to re-brand as ‘wellbeing’ organisation

CRT is currently attempting to re-brand itself as an organisation promoting well-being. The purpose of the re-branding is to raise funds from local authorities and the NHS for the promotion of health and well-being of the general population. However CRT appears to have no intention of safeguarding the well-being of boat dwellers, even vulnerable ones.

If you have school age children, tell CRT you require a reduced cruising pattern in term time

On 14th February 2017 the Waterways Ombudsman stated in a case report (Case no 933) that CRT intended in the coming weeks to publish “illustrative cruising patterns” for liveaboard boaters with school age children. In the Navigation Advisory Group meeting of 13th February 2017, former Head of Boating Mike Grimes stated: “We’re looking at putting together and publish soon some example compliant movement patterns that boaters with children could look at to help inform their movement patterns”.
