Hungerford marina to go ahead

The proposed new marina at Hungerford is to go ahead after planners approved the revised plans of site owners Lakeland Leisure on 23rd December 2015. Planning permission for a marina at the site near Cobblers Lock was first granted in 2004 after a 12-year battle with conservationists and local residents.

West Berkshire Council made approval of the plans conditional on finding adequate measures to prevent pollution of the rivers Dun and Kennet; to mitigate the impact of the marina on water levels on the canal; to clear up possible asbestos pollution and to mitigate the impact on the adjacent Freeman’s Marsh SSSI.

Local residents had also raised concerns about the number of heavy lorries passing through the town during the construction works. The marina will not welcome liveaboards according to a spokesperson from Lakeland Leisure in October 2015.
