K&A relay in September to raise funds for hospice

A boater is planning a sponsored hitch-hike by boat along the K&A from 1st to 6th September to raise funds for Dorothy House Hospice in Winsley. Lady Jacqui Aster will be hitch hiking from Newbury to her own boat moored in Bathampton to raise awareness and money for the hospice, where she is a patient.

She says “I have an ultra-rare adrenocortical cancer, first diagnosed eight and a half years ago, it has recurred five times and I’ve now run out of treatment options that are acceptable to me. I’m feeling remarkably well at the moment, mostly thanks to the amazing team at Dorothy House. The most important thing for me is that I remain at home, on my beautiful historic wooden narrowboat. Dorothy House will make sure that happens and provide all the care and support my family, friends and I need”.

“The Kennet and Avon Relay began life as an idea for a free holiday! I thought it might be a good way to raise a few quid for Dorothy House…then I mentioned it to a friend, Will Trickett, who got a bit carried away with big ideas. He challenged me to hitch hike the K&A, using as many boats as I can, raise loads of money for Dorothy House and ‘have a cracking time’.”

This is Jacqui’s approximate plan:

Monday 1st Sept: Newbury to Crofton
Tuesday 2nd: Crofton to Honey Street
Wednesday 3rd: Honey Street to Devizes Top Lock
Thursday 4th: Caen Hill Flight to Foxhangers/Sells Green
Friday 5th: Sells Green to Semington
Saturday 6th: Semington to Bathampton
