Help stop british waterways from denying boater’s legal mooring rights and destroying boating communities

A petition has been launched at the consultation meetings

We object to BW introducing time limited mooring restrictions in the Bath to Bradford-on-Avon area. We support the cruising boat people and their legal right to moor for 2 weeks without harassment.

Whereas, of course, every liveaboard boater, will instinctively agree with the statement, we primarily intend this petition as a vehicle for other boaters, local canalside business and residents to express their support and appreciation of the joy and life we bring wherever the canal touches their world.

Ian Gill managed over 1,000 signatures just from passers by to his boat, let’s have some competition here. Let’s gather a voice that cannot be ignored.

We will present this petition to BW on camera by local boater’s children with the maximum exposure on local and national press.

Statement

HELP STOP BRITISH WATERWAYS FROM DENYING BOATER’S LEGAL MOORING RIGHTS AND DESTROYING BOATING COMMUNITIES

The fascinating lifestyle and charm of the boat people and their barges is obvious to so many visitors to the canal.

The boats bring so many positives to the canal experience. For example :-

  • They bring life and colour to the canal
  • They are a showcase community for a low carbon lifestyle and sustainable power solutions
  • Their presence makes towpath users feel more secure
  • Their licence fees contribute to the upkeep of the canal and towpath and are customers of local businesses

British Waterways (BW) wish to restrict access to mooring in the Bath to Bradford-on-Avon area.

The 1995 British Waterways Act allows boaters to moor for 2 weeks before having to move. BW want to reduce this to 2 or 3 days. This will make it hard for boating families to get to work and get their children to school …they will lose access to employment and services!!

BW’s intention is to make this stretch viable only to holiday boats and weekend boaters whatever the cost to legitimate, licensed, live-aboard boaters.

Help save this vibrant community by signing the petition below
