Wadworths refuse to re-instate Horton Bridge bins – please sign petition!

The Chief Executive of Wadworths Brewery, Chris Welham, has refused to re-instate the boaters’ rubbish bins at the Bridge Inn, Horton following a complaint. Boaters have now started an online petition calling on both Wadworths and Canal & River Trust to re-instate the bins.

Council’s Devizes Wharf plans will affect boaters – please attend meeting 18th September

Wiltshire Council’s plans to develop land at Devizes Wharf will affect boaters. Plans for a footpath between Lock 50 and the Wharf Theatre could reduce mooring space and adversely impact all boaters. Please attend the Devizes Area Board meeting on 18th September and make your concerns known.

CRT set minimum distance – without telling us what it is

Yesterday CRT announced that from 1st May 2015 that it is extending its “new continuous cruiser” enforcement process to all boats licensed without a home mooring. It declared that it would refuse to renew the licences of the boats that have moved the least over their licence year unless they obtain a home mooring, and that boats that travel further but whose movement falls short of the movement required by Section 17 3 c ii of the British Waterways Act 1995 would only have their licences renewed for a short period and if their movement was still not considered adequate, they too would be forced to take a mooring or CRT would refuse to renew their licence. Yet CRT has not stated what it means by boats that move the least, and neither has it disclosed what distance it considers acceptable.

CRT moorings consultation sparks angry petition

CRT is holding another consultation on methods for allocation of its directly managed moorings, but despite the previous consultation in 2008 showing overwhelming opposition to the principle of an auction system, it is refusing to even consider abandoning the auctions. In addition, the consultation only runs for one month, in contravention of the law on consultations. If you oppose the mooring auctions, please respond to the consultation before 3rd November expressing your opposition. Send your response to mooring.updates@canalrivertrust.org.uk. How much has Sally Ash cost boaters?

Sally Ash, the unpopular Head of Boating, finally retires at the end of this month after 38 years working for BW and CRT. She joined BW as a researcher in 1976 following a Masters degree at Reading University. Here we take a look back at some of her activities and the cost of her career both to boaters and to her employers, not only in financial terms but also in goodwill, time and effort.

Canoe slipway means loss of mooring space on Devizes Wharf – object by 3rd July!

A planning application by Devizes Canoe Club to build a slipway will result in the loss of what is now permanent mooring space at Lower Wharf, Devizes.If you are concerned about the loss of mooring space, the deadline for objections is July 3rd.
