Send your photos, videos or accounts of dangerous boat handling under the influence of alcohol or drugs to the Department for Transport before 1st November!

The Department for Transport (DfT) is running a consultation on strengthening enforcement against the dangerous use of recreational and personal watercraft. The consultation mainly concerns the dangerous use of craft such as jetskis. However the DfT is also asking in Question 12 for respondents to submit documentary evidence that alcohol or drug use among recreational mariners is leading to safety concerns or an increased number of accidents or incidents.

The closing date is 1st November. Send your evidence (photos, videos or written descriptions) and any response to the consultation to maritimesafety@dft.gov.uk with the subject heading: Consultation on enforcement re dangerous use of recreational and personal watercraft.

CRT threaten to remove boaters’ possessions from towpath between Avoncliff and Bridge 173 in April

CRT has stated that it will remove any items left on or beside the towpath between Smelly Bridge (Bridge 173) and Avoncliff if these are not removed before April 2021. Due to the pandemic, CRT has provided a skip at Bridge 173 for boaters to dispose of any unwanted items.

CRT is threatening to terminate the licences of boaters who “persistently obstruct the towpath or use Trust land for storing items from their boat”. This is another reason to oppose and resist CRT’s proposed changes to the Boat Licence Terms and Conditions

Stag party crew sinks liveaboard – community meeting this Wed 26th September

There will be an emergency meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 26th September 2018 at the Canal Tavern, Bradford on Avon to discuss action following the sinking of a historic wooden narrowboat by a stag party on hire boats from ABC Leisure at the weekend. CRT, hire companies and Wiltshire Council have been invited.

Boaters meet with hire companies over ASB stag parties

Last year over 150 people, mostly liveaboard boaters, signed a letter to Avon and Somerset and Wiltshire police forces about the concerns of liveaboard boaters, leisure boaters and residents along the western end of the K&A about the activities and behaviour of some hire boat groups, especially stag and hen parties.

Progress on hire boat stag parties

The BaNES Gypsy, Traveller, Boater and Roma Community Support Service report that over the summer they met with Chief Inspector Thatcher of Avon and Somerset Police on the issue of anti-social hire boaters. Avon and Somerset Police and Wiltshire Police have produced a joint leaflet which has been delivered by them to the hire boat companies along the western K&A, along with a message that the police will take action against drunk and anti-social behaviour from hirers and will be keeping a log of the number of reported incidents, which could result in action being taken against companies that persistently hire to this type of customer.

ASBO officer wants videos of stag party behaviour

Following discussions with liveaboard boaters, Tim Harris, the Antisocial Behaviour Officer for BaNES has asked for video evidence of stag party hire boat crews causing damage to boats or behaving offensively or abusively.
