There will be a Boat Fire Safety talk at the Cross Guns in Avoncliff, on Monday 21st November 2016 at 7.30pm. The Fire Service will be giving out free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors and showing people the best way to use them.
Juian House Travelling Community Support Service is working with Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service again this winter to put on a programme of boat fire safety presentations in canal-side pubs.
If anyone missed out last year on the presentation and their free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, or if you just need to refresh your memory, please come along. All boaters are welcome.
A massive 28% of boat fires result in fatalities; carbon monoxide is as big a danger on boats as smoke inhalation and fire. Find out how to minimise this risk.
Among the safety tips that firefighters will be sharing with boaters are:
*Fit a suitable smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm.
*Make a fire action plan.
*Take extreme care when refuelling with petrol or changing gas cylinders.
*Avoid using portable gas equipment on-board, where possible, and store all gas canisters in special gas lockers or open places where any leaks will flow overboard.
*Routinely check items such as battery terminals and fuse box connections for damaged strands or signs of overheating.
*Take care when doing repairs, and keep interiors well ventilated when using adhesives, paints and spirit based products.
