Boat Fire Safety Talk, Bathampton, 12th March

The last Boat Fire Safety Talk of this winter will be on Monday 12th March 2018 at 7.30pm at the George Inn, on the K&A canal in Bathampton. The George is under new management. The talk will be in the function room at the back of the pub.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service will be giving comprehensive advice on how to make your boat as fire safe as possible and what to do in case of fire, including FREE smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms.

Don’t become a statistic – according to the Fire Service, a massive 28% of boat fires cause fatalities. Don’t let this happen to you!! Come and find out how to prevent fire hazards on your boat.

The Fire Safety sessions are organised by Julian House Travelling Communities Support Service in conjunction with the two local Fire and Rescue Services: Avon, and Dorset and Wiltshire. The Fire Service will continue to offer fire safety advice on the towpath or you can request a free boat fire safety visit. Also look out for Boat Fire Safety Week at the end of May when fire officers will be out on the towpath offering boat fire safety checks and free smoke and CO alarms.

Here are some fire safety tips that firefighters have shared with boaters at the talks over the winter:

*Fit a suitable smoke detector and carbon monoxide alarm.

*Make a fire action plan.

*Take extreme care when refuelling with petrol or changing gas cylinders.

*Avoid using portable gas equipment on-board, where possible, and store all gas canisters in special gas lockers or open places where any leaks will flow overboard.

*Routinely check items such as battery terminals and fuse box connections for damaged strands or signs of overheating.

*Take care when doing repairs, and keep interiors well ventilated when using adhesives, paints and spirit based products.
