Following the tragic death of a boater in a fire on a boat at Hilperton Marsh last November, Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service is once again sending Boat Fire Safety Advisers cycling along the towpath and to marinas offering FREE boat fire safety checks and smoke alarms. May 25th to 31st is Boat Fire Safety Week throughout the country.
In Wiltshire, you can also call 0800 3897849 to arrange a FREE boat fire safety check or contact damien.bence@wiltsfire.gov.uk. If you have previously had a smoke alarm from Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service and it needs replacing, they will replace it FREE of charge.
Over the last 20 years, around 60 boaters have died as the result of a fire or carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. CO poisoning is most likely to be caused by the exhaust emissions of portable generators, or problems with solid fuel stoves including flue pipes.
