Newbury is a water and sanitation facilities desert, and boaters have been lobbying CRT to install a water tap. CRT had been planning to install a water tap outside the Tesco supermarket which is next to the River Kennet below Greenham lock 86.
However despite the pipe being laid, this plan had to be abandoned half way through, due to what CRT called “a legislative/ compliance issue that we could not overcome”. CRT now says that its Area Operations Manager has contacted West Berkshire Council seeking an opportunity to install a water point as part of a future development near the canal.
