Ten adults and three children carried out a Gordon Brown-style (who?) deep clean of the towpath between Bradford lock and Limpley Stoke on Saturday 13th November. Mark Stephens, Manager of the Kennet and Avon Canal, took time out of his weekend to greet the towpath tidiers and was suitably impressed by the first Bradford on Avon Star Class work boat, built at Bradford Wharf in 2008. The litter pickers concentrated their efforts on clearing rubbish from thebottom of the canal embankment and discovered that a cross-section of towpath users seem to think it’s ok not to take their litter home or to the bin. This was quite slow work but was helped by a cup of tea from a boater at Avoncliff. As the light began to fade, the team got onto Ishtar the work boat, now full of rubbish, and chugged off to Dundas where they were greeted by hot soup and bread from another boater after they has unloaded.

BANES are advertising for street cleaners at the moment… although if any litter pickers are considering applying for a job with BANES recycling forget it as the Tories, in line with current policy, will be taking ANOTHER dust cart off the roads and the crew will be down the job centre soon, so we’ll soon have even more volunteers to help out
