There are thousands of us, and we’re not going to move into houses…

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

There’s going to be a census this year – it happens every 10 years. The census day is 27 March. We understand that census forms will be sent out by post this time, rather than being delivered by hand. If you have a postal address, especially if you are registered to vote, you will probably get a form. If you don’t have a postal address, you can call the census helpline on 0300 0201 101 from 4 March to get one, and you can arrange to have it sent to a postal address or possibly hand-delivered to you at a location of your choice.

Trading boats under threat

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Recently BW has proposed changes in rules and regulations that affect roving canal traders such as coal and diesel boats and travelling shops. The main change BW wants to make is to increase their licence fee.

The present situation is that most of these traders pay £30-£40 over and above a normal boat licence fee on the basis that their business is what BW call ‘low intensity’ – they only make a small amount of profit. The new fee will see their business licence replaced with a normal licence and a new permit, and lots of extra regulations. This will see the fee increase to £156 above the normal licence fee. Their ability to trade and make a living on the waterways will be affected.

A new web site has been set up with the aim of giving a voice to the small traders on the canals of the United Kingdom.

It’s at http://www.canaltraders.org.uk/

There are many traders on the canal selling a diverse range of products such as traditional canalware, ropes, fenders, cheese, groceries, jewellery, fudge , cratch covers, boat names and embroidery.  The many trades afloat serve the boating community, bring diversity and enhance the public’s enjoyment of the waterways. We wish them the best of luck in challenging this licence fee increase.

Christmas Photo Competition Winner!!

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

Congratulations Kris Malarchist, you are the lucky winner of a lifetime’s free membership of our web site!! You contributed the funniest caption to the photo of a liveaboard boater’s encounter with Simon Salem, BW Marketing Director –
“Salem: I feel sick. Boater: I thought so – I spiked the punch.”

Kris, your prize is in the post…!!

For some reason we received a lot of entries we couldn’t publish, as even we thought they were too offensive to BW…and a few that missed the deadline, but we thought one of those was good enough to let it through anyway.

Carol service cancelled

Friday, December 3rd, 2010

We have received this messsage from Peter Atwill on Gospel Belle:

The Carol Service at Dundas Basin on the 4th December at
6.00 is cancelled this year. The weather has beaten us, we cannot take the
chance of any one slipping and hurting themselves.

We really appreciate it if you could let any one else know you see who might
have been intending to go. Many Thanks.

Dundas Carol Service

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

The boaters’ carol service will take place at Dundas Aqueduct on Saturday 4th December at 6pm. As the picture from last year shows, this is a magical event enjoyed by boaters and local residents alike. There will be mince pies afterwards. The service is organised by Canal Ministries, who also offer free food all year round to people in need on the waterways.

Deep Clean!

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Ten adults and three children carried out a Gordon Brown-style (who?) deep clean of the towpath between Bradford lock and Limpley Stoke on Saturday 13th November. Mark Stephens, Manager of the Kennet and Avon Canal, took time out of his weekend to greet the towpath tidiers and was suitably impressed by the first Bradford on Avon Star Class work boat, built at Bradford Wharf in 2008.

A message from London

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

We received this lovely message from a boater in London recently.

“I am so glad that you are working on all this, hopefully with support. I don’t know if this is useful for you but here are my experiences from travels and at home.

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

The Kennet and Avon Canal Trust and British Waterways are asking local people and organisations to nominate interested individuals to become volunteer board members on the new Waterway Partnership Board.  The deadline is very soon. It’s really important that as many boaters as possible volunteer to be on the board of the partnership so that we are properly represented. Contact administrator@katrust.org.uk  by Friday 27 August 2010 to nominate yourself.

Tipton

Monday, June 21st, 2010

We received a message from Colin Hobbs who is looking for photos of Tipton, the coal and diesel boat featured in our article here
http://kanda.boatingcommunity.org.uk/wordpress/?p=132

Colin says “My Mother’s family worked and I guess lived on Tipton in the 1930s and 1940s, and I was wondering if there may be some old photos of the family about somewhere. The family name was Holt, my grandfather the skipper was Arthur Holt. They may have worked other boats but this is the only boat name I remember”.

If anyone can help, please contact Colin at halsewell@lineone.net
