As liveaboard boaters without home moorings are being unlawfully forced by CRT to travel longer distances to avoid having our homes seized and removed, many of us have also been forced to use cars to get to work and take children to school, when previously we could rely on cycling and public transport. Many are now having to travel to work or school from places that are much further away, including rural Wiltshire and Berkshire, where public transport is poor or non-existent.

Yesterday (16th August 2017) CRT seized a boat that was a vulnerable person’s home using its powers under Sections 8 and 13 of the British Waterways Acts 1983 and 1971. The boat was craned out at Devizes Wharf at 11am and taken to an unknown location by road. There were 8 bailiffs and enforcement staff present.
UPDATE: It has been reported that the evicted person is now sleeping rough.

Wiltshire Council is carrying out an assessment of the housing needs of people who use a boat as their main home and is inviting boat dwellers both with and without a home mooring in Wiltshire to complete a survey. If you are permanently or temporarily in Wiltshire, or you travel through Wiltshire please take part. The survey is online and the Council is also going to make paper copies available. We will publicise how you can get a paper copy as soon as possible.

The next meeting of the K&A Boaters’ Action Group will be on Monday August 14th 2017 at 7.30pm at the Brewery Inn, 69 Seend Cleeve, SN12 6PX – a short walk up the hill from locks 18 and 19. All are welcome. This meeting will focus on CRT’s consultation on changes to boat licensing. We also have 6 Boat Fire Safety Packs to give away (we can get more if people need them).
