Life along the Kennet and Avon canal has of late adopted a gently surreal Kafkaesque tone.
The latest offering from the CART is a letter telling people they haven’t ‘moved through enough neighbourhoods’ in the last three months. it ends with a black edged obituary box stating “YOU ARE AT RISK OF LOSING YOUR BOAT’.

A Freedom of Information (FOI) request has confirmed the suspicions of many that CRT had not intended to publish the ‘places’ maps in August. Boaters who wanted to find out more were nonplussed by the absence of announcements on the CRT web site.

Following much adverse publicity about evictions of vulnerable, elderly, ill and disabled boat dwellers, CRT has agreed to appoint a Boater Welfare Liaison Manager for an initial period of 12 months.

Responses to the consultation on the Towpath Mooring Plan for the K&A west of Devizes have to be in by 29th November. The proposals will affect all boaters using the K&A between Bath and Devizes. Boaters without home moorings on the southern Grand Union Canal are being offered Roving Mooring Permits by CRT. Boaters are being offered a way out of the enforcement process that means paying a substantial extra fee (£800 per year for a 60 foot boat) to do what s.17(3)(c)(ii) of the British Waterways Act 1995 already permits them to do.
