The volunteer scheme supporting liveaboard boaters on the western K&A through the Coronavirus lockdown is ending when enforcement of boat movement every 14 days resumes this week, because the full volunteering scheme will be too challenging with boats coming and going daily. The red, amber and green signalling system will not be monitored from now on.

The Boat Safety Scheme (BSS) has announced that boat safety examinations can now resume for most boat owners, but they will happen in a ‘new normal’ framework based on the latest Government guidance.

CRT has announced a phased return to navigation in England with short day trips permitted from 13th May 2020. From 23rd May, enforcement of the 14-day rule will resume and visitor moorings will revert to summer time limits.

Yesterday (11th May 2020) CRT announced that the suspension of all but essential boat movements would continue until 23rd May. Visitor moorings can continue to be used for 14 days where this applies.

Whilst it has not yet been possible to set up dedicated support for liveaboard boaters on the eastern K&A during the coronavirus lockdown, there are some land based community support groups in that operate from Great Bedwyn eastwards.

Local liveaboards, waterway businesses and charities have joined together to keep supplies going to boaters during the coronavirus lockdown, including an extension of the Pay It Forward scheme where you can donate to cover the cost of fuel or food for someone who is struggling financially.

CRT has extended its suspension of the 14-day rule until 9th May and has advised that only essential boat movements are permitted until at least this date. CRT’s winter visitor mooring time limits of 14 days unless signed otherwise are also extended until 9th May. No boat sightings will be taken during the period that boat movements are suspended. Boat Safety certificates that are about to expire or have recently expired are now extended until 11 May 2020.
