Please respond to Wiltshire Gypsy and Traveller strategy consultation survey by 12th March

Wiltshire Council is consulting on its future Gypsy, Roma, Traveller and Boater (GRT&B) strategy. Please make sure that the voices and views of the liveaboard boater community are heard by completing this online survey by 5pm next Thursday 12th March 2020. Julian House Travelling Community Support Service extended to Wiltshire – boater support worker job vacancy

Wiltshire Council has just started a two-year project to tackle inequalities amongst Boaters, Gypsies and Travellers in Wiltshire. This is a partnership between Julian House and the Wiltshire Traveller Reference Group. Julian House is now recruiting for a Boater Outreach and Engagement Worker to cover Bradford on Avon to Devizes and beyond. First ever nationwide liveaboard boater health survey

Friends, Families and Travellers (FFT) are carrying out a health survey of liveaboard boaters as part of their campaign to end discrimination in health services. This is the first nationwide health survey of the liveaboard boating community.

Secretive anti-liveaboard group set up by DEFRA – please write to your MP now!

A multi-agency working group on “residential houseboats” was set up by the DEFRA Inland Waterways Policy Land Use section over a year ago in December 2017, “tasked to look at the issue of illegally [sic] moored houseboats”.

Your comments will help to shape the Council’s approach to planning for the accommodation needs for residential boaters. CRT drops Section 8 cases following Court of Appeal judgement

CRT earlier this year stayed Section 8 cases against two boat dwellers without permanent moorings, Matthew Jones and Christopher McKendrick, following the Court of Appeal judgement in Matthew Jones’s favour on 7th March 2017, we can now reveal. The Consent Order sealed by Bristol County Court on 23rd May 2017 shows that CRT reached a settlement with Matthew Jones. Both Mr Jones and Mr McKendrick have now re-licensed their boats without a permanent mooring. Their homes are not now under threat of being seized by the charity. Both had been deemed by CRT not to have moved “far enough”.

Wiltshire boat dwellers survey available on paper

Paper copies of the Wiltshire Council boat dwellers survey are available for those who need them. You can collect a copy from Bradford on Avon, Devizes or Pewsey libraries. They will also be available on the Boaters’ Cafe Club outreach boat run by Julian House Gypsy, Traveller, Boater & Roma Community Support Service, which will be at Bradford Lower Wharf next Tuesday 5th September 12pm to 4pm. There may also be some distributed from boats in the Long Pound. Please pass this news on to anyone you know who might need it.

Wiltshire Council to assess housing needs of boat dwellers – please complete survey by 30th September!

Wiltshire Council is carrying out an assessment of the housing needs of people who use a boat as their main home and is inviting boat dwellers both with and without a home mooring in Wiltshire to complete a survey. If you are permanently or temporarily in Wiltshire, or you travel through Wiltshire please take part. The survey is online and the Council is also going to make paper copies available. We will publicise how you can get a paper copy as soon as possible.
