Coronavirus: CRT extends boat licences by one month

Canal & River Trust (CRT) is extending all private boat licences by one month in response to the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

Boat movement suspension extended to 9th May due to Coronavirus

CRT has extended its suspension of the 14-day rule until 9th May and has advised that only essential boat movements are permitted until at least this date. CRT’s winter visitor mooring time limits of 14 days unless signed otherwise are also extended until 9th May. No boat sightings will be taken during the period that boat movements are suspended. Boat Safety certificates that are about to expire or have recently expired are now extended until 11 May 2020.

101 Non-Emergency Police Calls Free as of 1st April

The Home Office announced recently that the charge for calling the police non-emergency number 101 would be scrapped from 1st April 2020. You should now be able to call 101 free of charge.

Coronavirus lockdown: boat movement suspension continues to 18th April

The Government today (13th April 2020) announced that the coronavirus lockdown would not be lifted when it is reviewed later this week. This will have implications for boat movements. Due to the earlier Government announcement that the lockdown will continue until at least 18th April 2020, CRT has extended its suspension of the 14-day rule until 18th April and has advised boaters to only move their boats if it is essential.

K&A’s French twin closes towpaths due to coronavirus

Unlike the K&A, the local authority in Nièvre, France, has closed the towpaths of the Canal du Nivernais, which is twinned with the Kennet and Avon Canal. River towpaths and cycle trails are also closed.

K&A Boaters’ Action Group meeting postponed due to coronavirus

The K&A Boaters’ Action Group meeting that was due to take place on 20th April 2020, has been postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and the closure of canalside pubs for the duration of the lockdown. The next Boaters’ Action Group meeting, scheduled for 8th June, may take place depending on the lockdown situation.

Visitor mooring and BSS limits extended but CRT refuses to close towpaths

CRT has extended the period that boaters can stay on some visitor moorings for 14 days due to the suspension of all but essential boat movements following the Government’s Covid-19 lock-down announcement. Where visitor moorings revert to 14 days in winter, this will now be extended up to 14th April, when CRT will review its suspension of the 14-day rule.

The Boat Safety Scheme is also allowing temporary extension to boat safety certificates for those boats that require an examination in the period up to 14th April. The notice from the Boat Safety Scheme is here NR20-001_COVID-19_BSS_Temporary_Suspension-FINAL
