Boaters’ Easter regatta protest against surcharge 30th March – bus from K&A!

There will be an Easter Regatta in protest against the surcharge on boat licence fees without a home mooring on Saturday 30th March 2024 at 12 noon. It will take place in Paddington Canal Basin in central London. There will be a demonstration, music, stalls and more. The march begins at the exit from Paddington Station to the canal.

Licence Surcharge Protest at CRT offices, Birmingham, 25th November – bus from Pewsey and BoA

CRT is planning to levy a ‘surcharge’ on boats licensed without a home mooring, which will start at 5% of the licence fee in April 2024 and increase to 25% by 2028. This could price us off the waterways and eliminate our nomadic way of life. There will be a national protest march on CRT Chief Executive Richard Parry’s office at Cambrian Wharf in central Birmingham to oppose the surcharge on our community. The march is organised by the National Bargee Travellers Association (NBTA).

Boaters’ meeting to discuss licence fee surcharge, 15th October, Bradford on Avon

There will be a boaters’ meeting to discuss the CRT surcharges for boats without a home mooring; lack of facilities; lack of waterway maintenance and other issues that affect the community of liveaboard boaters on the K&A, and what we can do to protect our way of life.

The meeting will take place at 5pm on Sunday 15th October 2023 at the Wallington Hall, Church St, Bradford on Avon BA15 1LN. Church St is opposite the Dandy Lion pub; the hall used to be called the Masonic Hall or the Church Hall.

CRT impose surcharge on boat licences without a home mooring

Following the CRT consultation on licence fees in March this year, CRT announced on 5th October 2023 that it would impose a surcharge on licences without a home mooring, making these licences more expensive than licences for boats with a home mooring. We oppose this discriminatory and unfair move, which is the biggest attack on the community of liveaboard boaters without a home mooring since CRT’s 2015 enforcement policy for boats without a home mooring.

Landmark judgement confirms Housing Benefit for boat licence fees

In a landmark judgement issued on 25th June 2020 (AB v London Borough of Camden (HB) [2020] UKUT 158 (AAC)), the Upper Tribunal has confirmed that Housing Benefit is payable for boat licence fees because the boat licence fee if living aboard is rent.
