We have just heard that Sally Ash, CRT’s Head of Boating, dubbed the ‘Wicked Witch of Watford’ and ‘Cruella De Vil’ by boaters for her efforts over many years to destroy the lives of liveaboard continuous cruisers, is to retire at the end of June this year.

Sally Ash has posted a new article on CRT’s web site that seeks to discourage people from exercising the right to live on a boat without a home mooring that all CRT licence holders enjoy. “Spreading the word about the demands of living afloat” misinforms people, saying that the law does not allow them to “simply to move around within a small area” and blames continuous cruisers for spoiling everybody’s enjoyment of the waterways.

This web site’s Editor received a letter from CRT recently threatening to take court proceedings for libel against the web site because of statements made in articles revealing and commenting about BW/CRT’s relationship with hire boat holiday brokers Drifters Leisure Limited.

We thought it would be nice for those of us who are interested in Drifters and their contribution to the boat hire industry to see how well they are doing their job.
It is obvious to anyone concerned with marketing tourism and holidays that the first port of call these days for prospective customers are the internet search engines and, in particular, Google. So we ran a ‘rank check’ on certain keywords with the website www.drifters.co.uk to see exactly how well they are doing their job.

The CRT Trustees decided recently that Nigel Johnson, the Legal and Corporate Services Director, will retire in 2014 because “We have decided that in the longer term the Trust does not require the expertise of a full time Legal Director”. His post will not be replaced. We have also learnt that Head of Boating Sally Ash has had responsibility for moorings shifted away from her, with her team being shrunk to cover policy on boating and mooring only.

On the day that the Canal and River Trust held its launch in London, boaters have discovered that Head of Boating Sally Ash has been the director of a canal holiday brokerage company since 2004. Liveaboard boaters have often speculated about the reason behind her department’s policy of harassment and bullying of boaters without home moorings, and this conflict of interest provides a possible explanation.
